Adding polish to your games
Jul/084
It’s something I most definitely suffer from, how to add a visually pleasing finish to your game. Those little tips and tricks that made your game really stand out and lookin’ fine. So, I went and had a bit of a hunt for some resources that will help you to give your game that ‘touch’ extra that makes it look and feel great to play!
Frame transistions
So, the first thing I found was on a blog that I’d definitely reccomend, Aksel Kornesjö. He seems to be away for a while, but the archive (however little there is currently) is definitely worth a read. Anyway, the thing that stood out for me was this tutorial on the ’sliding door’ frame transistion. What surprised me was how easy it was to implement, and how once added you could easily include it wherever you wanted to gotoAndStop! I’ll definitely be using it in future games!
A list to avoid!
Something I saw on Emanuele Feronato today, a list of 50 ways to make people hate your Flash game. Reading down the list I realised I was guilty of a few of them (I shall strive to acheive better!). It’s definitely a good list for new developers, and I suggest you checkout the original post at The Helion Code.
First impressions
The new First Impressions service from FlashGameLicense.com looks like a great way to smooth out those wrinkles in your games, without exposing it to the general public before a sponsorship. I’ve yet to try it out, but I certainly will be. Take a look.
Make your text stand out!
Plain text is boring. Trust me. Whilst simple fonts are an excellent choice for blocks of writing, headers and logos should be interesting and should grab your player’s attention. I recently came across this list of text effects, but there are plenty more out there, Experiment!
Embed your dynamic fonts!
Goes without saying that you should be embedding fonts for your dynamic text fields, but newer developers may well be unaware of how to do it! Check out these resources on embedding your fonts.
There you have it, 5 resources that will help you fine tune your Flash Game. If you have any more, feel free to add your tips to the comments below!
EDIT: MrSunStudios has released a second list, 50 ways to make us LOVE your Flash game, I suggest you check that out too!
