PHP Tutorial Part II

Yeah, so, this is Part 2 of the PHP Tutorial. I just hope somebody reads it...

Anyways, last time I showed you the echo statement. However, the echo statement is pretty boring on its own, because you can just type whatever it is out in the HTML document. Its usefulness will be shown in time. However, I will now show you the magic that are variables!

If you haven’t already guessed…..

FrozenHaddock has not had ANY updates for about 2 years now. We did leave it in the hands of a few loyal community members, but with no updates at all this has not obviously worked out.

So yeah, this is pretty much a post saying that FrozenHaddock is now inactive. The site will remain here and you can access all of the tutorials and you never know the odd new one may creep up, but don't count on it.

The original admins, being Tom (GeneShark) and myself are running 2 other websites however. These would be:

Both communities for these are a live and well (at the moment). If you needed to contact us in anyway the easiest way would be through our IRC channels on the appliedirc network (#moretothegame/#turtlestomp).

Or email us at

tom [{at}] turtlestomp.com / moretothegame.co.uk

daryl [{at}] turtlestomp.com / moretothegame.co.uk

Goodbye FrozenHaddock, it may have taken 2 years of no activity and an email remaining me of you sitting there gathering dust, but you are now actually announced as inactive.

Flash inspired music?

Remember playing Pandemic 2? Remember sitting there watching the Earth crumble before your mighty infecting powers? Remember buying a new keyboard after you hit the last one too hard after Madagascar closed it's ports for the 50th time that night?

Well one person sure does.

Ben Forbes: Singer songwriter, friend of mine and nerd.

His latest song to be released online is all about Madagascar and their pesky ports... go and have a listen!

Anyone else know of any flash-inspired music?

FlashGameLicense releases GameTracker Alpha

Today marks the release of FGL's new developer service GameTracker, an API designed to track how players actually play your game. Can't get better feedback than the way they play itself can you?

Intended for use with rough tracking and important events, now you can find out how people play. Ever wanted to know if anyone finishes your game? Which level people get stuck on and give up with? Which important collectable they continually miss? Now you can!

Currently only in Alpha, and AS3, the API is expected to change dramatically, and AS2 support is planned.

For more information, check out the FGL Forums announcement here (You will require an account, and an uploaded game to view this board.)

Avoiding Game Tutorial 1 – Troubleshooting Guide

Here are the most common problems after completing the first part of the Avoiding Game Tutorial:

The enemies aren't killing the player!
The most common mistake in this is that the player's instance name is wrong. In the properties inspector, check that you have an instance name of "player" exactly with no capital P. Absolute beginners of flash may get confused with this - when you convert to symbol you are defining its library name - the instance name is defined in the input box that says on it. If problems persist check the code on the enemy. Part of it should say:

if (this.hitTest(_root.player){
_root.gotoAndStop(2)
}

check that the _root. tag is present.

The timer is says NaN!
Check that you have put "clock = 0" on the on the game frame.

The timer carries on counting on the gameover screen!
Check that your clock is not present on the gameover frame, only the dynamic text field.

Only one enemy kills the player!
This is caused by all of them having the same instance name.
a) remove all your enemy's instance names
b) make every enemy have a different one.

If you have any other problem not mentioned above, or your problem is still not fixed, either comment on the Avoiding Game Tutorial by Tazzydevil or below.

A quick new year update

Hope you all had a great christmas and new year. It seems ages since this site was last updated, but I can promise some content soon. Even if I have to do it myself, but wait a couple of weeks though, as most of us have January module exams. But after thatyou can expect more AS3 tutorials coming from me, Tom and possibly brart, and more pascal tutorials. Anyway keep an eye out. Or even subscribe to our RSS feed!

Meanwhile, if you would like to help us with a tutorial please see the contact page and contact either Tom or myself.
