Procrastination and Meatspace

Rails, Norwich
Rails by FrozenHaddock, see more on Flickr

Many apologies for the severe lack of content here recently. I can assure you, I'm not dead.

To start with, I was merely a lazy teenager recently discovering *gulp* actual social interaction and taking exams, then general Meatspace issues interfered with my access to a computer with a copy of Flash.

However, I have computer access now (Admittedly still no Flash, but I'm hoping to return to my trusty home machine soon) and I intend to get the blog moving again! I'm sure I own enough creativity to write without a copy of Flash for now... :)

Thanks to the forum-dwellers for keeping it alive in my absence, even though we had an attack of spam. You guys rock.

This post does't have much interesting, so I'll leave you with one of my photographs for now. It's a habit I've gotten from my personal blog, and I like the effect. I'll try and include at least one relevant image with each post from now on, though as this doesn't have much of a theme to it, I raided my Flickr account. I hope you don't mind.

Forum Update

After nearly losing everything, I managed to undo the update, restore all data, posts etc. Then I re-installed successfully. I don't know what's new but enjoy.

Also not the new site Christmas layout. Comment here if you have any thoughts about it.

When I can get round to some spare time, I'll try and do some tutorials. I think for now I'll stick pascal to one side, soon as though this site will need a lot more AS3 content, especially with TDXIII making the jump now. So keep your eyes peeled this December.

Thank you

Just a slight technical hitch…

After an update gone awry, the forum is temporarily down.

I'm writing this literally 10 minutes or so after Dazza_13 pointed it out, and he has now started attempts on fixing it, so it may well be up soonish, but best to be safe than sorry eh?

So if you have any issues, comment on the relevant tutorial or if it's a general question comment here and I'll try and get back to you :)

Whilst I'm here, coming soonish: My wonderful learning AS3 adventures: Part 1. Where I show you what I created following an easy and free to use tutorial from another website. Hurrah!

Toodles, and hopefully by the time you read this the forum is back!

An RTS

I've been working on an RTS for a few days. It's a "Warlord: call to arms" clone.

Here it's:  - Play -

This is a direct link: The source code.

For more explanation: Forum

Still to be added:

  1. A shop
  2. A world map
  3. a goal
  4. more units
  5. better AI
  6. music

You can move  the blue arrow up and down with the arrow keys. Build a unit at that point with spacebar and switch between different kinds of units with left and right. Get your units to the rigth side of the game and receive a bonus of 100 wich makes you able to build two new units.

This is the first version on this blog so I hope you enjoy and please don't forget to leave a comment with anything you wish to be added.

AS3: Avoiding game part 3

That's right, part three of MichaelJWilliams's AS3 translation of the avoiding game tutorial series has been released (I have to say, I like your style Michael, Once an upgrade can be found I'll be learning along with them) and you should go and check it out!

Updates

Time for a general updates post methinks!

The forum is looking better, more people are signing up and hanging around. It's a good place to get answers to specific questions and feedback on projects you're working on, go take a look!

I bought my new PC :) But I'm currently *ahem* not allowed on it... hence the desperate hunt for a new power cable and intermittent communication, I am still here!

Tutorials wise, I'm working on a part 2 to the avoiding game, with the large amounts of updates in the comments, and any suggestions you have for it (Hit the comment thread there, here or the forum to suggest stuff) I may even rewrite the main part of it, there's a better way to do it which'll be a lot easier to work with. It's a little harder to grasp though, gimme your opinions on that too please!

I'm also thinking about Button Bashing Pt2, so any suggestions for that would go down a treat too.

I have a few engines salvaged from my old PC which may well be appearing soon, nice simple basis for games which can be built upon nicely, so look forward to that.

I have 2 games ready, bar music. I'm waiting on a friend of mine for music, but one of them I may just stick some loops in and send it into cyberspace... keep an eye out for 'The Climb' ;) Another game I'm currently working on has a preview up in the new members-only previews board on the forum, so go check it out!

Thanks for reading the blog!

It Lives!

Yes, you heard me right. You're not seeing things, at least, not this. I have no idea what you get up to in your personal life do I?

But I can give you a 100% guarantee that you are not hallucinating.

The. Forum. Is. Up.

I know, scary eh?

But here you go, a nice shiny link for you. Enjoy!

…you can probably guess – FORUM

Right, after origianly seeming pleased with simple:press, it only allows for 1 admin and is very restricted in terms of configuration, permission setting etc. So that is now dead

FORTUNATLEY I got on to Streamline (our host) and after 2 or 3 days of sending tickets back and forth we finally got phpBB3.0.1 on so HUZZAH's are in order.

Configuration, shouldn't take much longer, soon as though I don't have the podcast to worry about(although I do have to edit it) and it's my birthday tomorrow then MFL orals day after (with drum lesson and music coursework catch-up after school). So hopefully, when  Tom registers I'll admin him to help me.

Sorry for any problems, but I shouldn't be much longer now.

Thanks - Dazza_13
