I get the following errors:

Flash goes by the bounding box to judge whether two movie clips have hit each other. Therefore, a lot of the time things will not -look- as if they are in contact, but Flash will return that they are, and act accordingly.

This method of making the hittest better is a little crude, but it works :)

Basically, you need to go inside the movie clip you're testing that has boundary box issues (In this case, the player) and create a smaller, rectangular movie clip that will fit as closely inside it as possible to use as the more accurate 'Boundary Box'

So giving this smaller rectangular movie clip the instance name 'hit', and changing player.hitTest(otherMovieClip) to player.hit.hitTest(otherMovieClip) will check the rectangle instead of the player's actual boundary box.
